Trail Description

Munro Lake Lookout Trail in Coquitlam is a short hike that feels like a full workout. At just 4.2 km out and back with around 628 m of gain, it’s an extreme grind that most people underestimate. If you want a quiet, leg-burning climb with almost no distractions and very little traffic, this is the kind of trail that delivers exactly that.

The route starts steep and never really lets up, climbing on roots, rocks, and uneven steps that demand focus. The forest is shaded and humid near the bottom, then opens to cooler air and a bit of breeze once you’re above about 300 m. Views from the bluffs and south-facing viewpoints are decent but partly blocked by growing trees, so this one is more about the climb than a huge panorama, with the occasional frog hopping across the path to keep you on your toes.

Right now the Munro Lake Lookout Trail is reported as steep but in solid condition, with loose rock mostly near the bottom, almost no mud, and a well-marked route that isn’t overgrown. Expect it to feel much harder than a steep service road, and remember that the descent also takes energy on tired legs. Go in cooler weather if you can, carry plenty of water, watch for frogs underfoot, and keep an eye out for bears on the drive in, as they’re often spotted near the road even when there’s no fresh sign on the trail. The main season runs from spring to fall, but always check Pinecone Burke Provincial Park updates for any winter closures or changing conditions.
