Trail Description

Minnekhada Upper Marsh - Lower Lookout in Coquitlam is one of those short loops that packs in way more than you’d expect from 4.5 km. With only about 149 m of gain and a max altitude around 110 m, it’s an easy route on paper, but the mixed terrain and roots keep it just interesting enough. Families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for a quick nature fix away from Vancouver traffic tend to love this one.

The loop winds around the marsh and through the forest, so you get a mix of waterside walking and shaded woodland. The Lower Lookout gives you a solid view over the marsh and surrounding hills, and on clear days it feels surprisingly open for how low the elevation is. Along the way you’re walking on everything from packed gravel to roots and rocks, with remnants of last year’s forest fire visible in the trees, which adds a bit of atmosphere to the hike.

Recent hikers report the Minnekhada Upper Marsh - Lower Lookout trail as well maintained, mostly shaded, and very child friendly, but not a flat sidewalk stroll. Expect to watch your footing on the rooty sections and short hills, and give yourself around 1 hour 15 minutes at a relaxed pace. Wildlife is a big draw here: people are seeing birds, frogs, snakes, and even the odd seal in the water, plus black bears are active right now, so keep dogs leashed, make noise, and be ready to adjust your route if a bear is hanging out on the trail. This loop works year-round, but shoulder seasons and cooler days are especially nice with the shade and marsh views.
