Trail Description

Hoy Creek Trail in Coquitlam is an easy, shaded out-and-back route that feels more like a relaxed urban forest walk than a deep backcountry hike. At 8.2 km with only about 162 m of gain, it’s a comfortable two-hour outing that works well for casual walkers, runners, and families who want some green space without leaving the city.

The trail roughly follows Hoy Creek, dipping in and out of quiet forest patches with plenty of tree cover to keep things cooler on hot days. Parts of the route run along sidewalks near houses and through more developed sections, so it’s not a full-on wilderness experience, but the creek, trees, and occasional interpretive signs and hatchery area add some interest along the way.

Current reports mention a few busy road crossings with traffic lights, so expect to pause and wait at intersections and keep dogs leashed and close. Some people find the route easy to drift off if they’re not watching the map, especially near the more urban segments, so having a GPS app handy helps. The biggest climb comes near the end, but it’s short and manageable for most fitness levels. Hoy Creek Trail is open year-round in Coquitlam, with shade making summer walks more comfortable and the mostly gentle grades staying accessible in the wetter months, aside from the usual puddles and mud.
