Trail Description
Eagle Mountain to Buntzen Lake Trail is one of those Coquitlam-area routes that will work you hard and still have you smiling at the car. This 17.2 km loop climbs about 1366 m to roughly 1261 m, so expect a full-day grind around 8 hours with steep sections right out of the gate. It’s rated difficult for good reason, but the combination of ridge walking, viewpoints, and quiet forest makes the effort feel worthwhile.
The climb up from the Buntzen Lake side hits you fast, but the early viewpoints and spots like Eagle Bluffs and Mt Beautiful give you big payoffs with wide angles over Vancouver and the surrounding mountains. Past Mt Beautiful toward Swan Falls and the Dilly Dally area the trail gets rougher, muddier, and more overgrown, with some swampy stretches that will soak low-cut shoes. Views thin out along parts of the ridge, but when they open up, you’ll be glad you stuck with it.
Recent hikers report confusing markers on the Eagle Mountain to Buntzen Lake Trail, with mixed flagging, faint spray paint on rocks, and some fallen signs, so having a downloaded map and GPS is important. Expect mud near the top, bugs in warmer months, and snow and ice patches in late fall through early spring, when traction like microspikes can be the difference between turning back and finishing. Pack extra water, trekking poles, and basic emergency gear, wear waterproof boots, and keep an eye on Buntzen Lake gate hours, as parking lots have been closing around 7:30 pm, which comes fast on a long day like this.
