Trail Description

Dilly Dally Loop above Buntzen Lake in Coquitlam is one of those grinds you only sign up for if you really mean it. This 22.7 km loop with about 1,560 m of gain is rated very difficult for good reason: long, steep climbs, a punishing descent, and route-finding that keeps you on your toes. It’s a big full-day outing, usually around nine to ten hours, and better suited to experienced hikers who are comfortable with long, rough days in the backcountry.

The loop links the Halvor Lunden Trail, the lakes, Mount Beautiful, and the Dilly Dally summit into one long ridge rollercoaster. Views on a clear day stretch over Buntzen Lake, Indian Arm, and the North Shore peaks, with a bonus of small lakes, waterfalls, and classic mossy forest in between. Many locals say the best payoff is up to Mount Beautiful, with some choosing to turn around there instead of committing to the extra grind around the full Dilly Dally Loop.

Recent reports say the trail is overgrown in sections, very wet, and slippery after rain, with hornets, heavy bugs, and confusing flagging in spots, so a downloaded map or GPS is almost mandatory. Expect lingering snow and ice near the high points outside midsummer; hikers are recommending microspikes in shoulder season and waterproof pants unless you enjoy soaked legs. Most people carry at least 3 litres of water, aim for a dry weather window, and time this Coquitlam classic for August if you want the least snow and the most straightforward conditions.
