Trail Description
Diez Vistas Trail to Vista No. 1 is one of those short-but-spicy hikes that feels longer than 7.1 km thanks to the 532 m of gain. It starts from Buntzen Lake near Anmore, just north of Coquitlam, and climbs up to around 561 m for a solid leg burner and a big payoff at the first lookout. Expect about three hours return if you keep moving, more if you like to linger at the viewpoint.
The trail eases you in along the lake and through forest before ramping up into steep, rocky, rooty sections as you push toward Vista No. 1. Most of the route is in the trees with shade almost the whole way, then it pops open for views over Buntzen Lake, Indian Arm, and the North Shore mountains when the clouds cooperate. The route is generally well marked, but junctions around East Point and side trails toward South Beach can confuse people, so keep an eye on the Diez Vistas signs and your map.
Recent hikers report the Diez Vistas Trail to Vista No. 1 as dry to slightly muddy depending on the week, with slick rock and roots making the descent hard on knees and ankles. It’s steep and technical enough that poles, good shoes, and plenty of water are smart, and this is not a beginner hike despite the short distance. Parking at Buntzen Lake now often needs to be reserved in advance, cell service drops in spots, bears do wander through, and the trail has been closed at times due to high water levels, so check current notices, download your route, and aim for a clear day if you’re chasing the view.
