Trail Description

Bullet Dodger via Coquitlam River Trail in Coquitlam is a solid choice if you want a bit more challenge than the usual Crystal Falls stroll without committing to a full mountain grind. This 8.9 km out-and-back route follows the Coquitlam River before cutting uphill to about 400 m, with around 379 m of gain and a moderate rating that feels accurate for most hikers.

The first stretch along the Coquitlam River Trail is easy-going, with big trees, moss, lichen, and plenty of access to the water. Once you leave the river and start climbing toward Bullet Dodger, it quickly feels steeper and more like a mountain bike line, with loose rock, short punchy climbs, and some slippery sections on the way back down. You’ll hear the quarry and nearby gun range for part of the hike, but you also get a quieter forest feel in sections, plus a side trip option toward Crystal Falls when water levels and access allow.

Recent hikers report “No Trespassing” signs around 0.6 km in, plus sections that cross or border private property near the trailhead, so be extra respectful and know you’re there at the landowners’ tolerance. The area around the upper waterfall has seen damage, and at times you can’t safely cross or continue, so don’t count on pushing past the main viewpoint. Expect mud, loose rock, and bugs in the warmer months, snow and route-finding issues in winter, and bring shoes with good grip; this might only take around 2 hours 45 minutes, but the steeper bits of Bullet Dodger via Coquitlam River Trail can feel tough if you’re not ready for them.
