Trail Description

Belcarra Lookout in Belcarra Regional Park, just outside Coquitlam, is a short hike with a surprisingly big payoff. The 5.1 km out-and-back climbs about 313 m through dense coastal forest to a low bluff with a wide view over Indian Arm and the city. It’s rated moderate, but the steady uphill and rough sections make it feel like a mini grind that usually takes around two hours.

The hike starts on an easier main path before ducking into a narrower, quieter trail that feels far more remote than it is. You’ll wind through thick ferns and tall trees, stepping over roots, rocks, and the odd creek bed, with deep shade most of the way. At the lookout, you pop out onto open rock and grass with a clear view of the water, mountains, and city, a great spot to sit and soak in why Belcarra Lookout is one of the better close-to-Coquitlam viewpoints.

Recent hikers say the trail is poorly marked, with a couple of confusing turns near the start and just below the top, so keep AllTrails or a GPS app open; cell service is solid the whole way. After rain, expect running water, mud, and sections that feel like walking up a creek, so waterproof boots are smart, and in winter some people like having spikes. Bears are active in the area and there’s a no-food rule on the trail, so eat at the car, don’t go alone if you’re nervous, and aim for an early start as pay parking can fill fast on sunny days; you can always cool off with a quick dip at the small beach near the lot after.
