Trail Description
George Derby Loop in Burnaby is a short, quiet forest walk that feels more like a neighborhood escape than a big mountain mission. At just 2.4 km with about 64 m of gain and a max elevation around 99 m, it’s a very easy loop that most people finish in under 40 minutes, making it a simple add-on to your day rather than the main event.
The trail winds through second-growth forest with a mix of packed dirt and roots, and you’ll get that classic Burnaby woods vibe: tall trees, filtered light, and plenty of birdsong. Views are mostly forested rather than wide open, so the appeal of George Derby Loop is the calm, shaded atmosphere and the chance to stretch your legs without driving deep into the mountains.
Recent hikers report the George Derby Loop as wet, muddy, and a bit overgrown in sections, so expect slick patches and some brush on the sides of the trail, especially after rain. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty and watch your footing on roots and wooden sections, which can be slippery. This Burnaby loop can be walked year-round, but it feels more pleasant in the drier months; in fall and winter, plan for mud, puddles, and slower going than the 39-minute average.
