Trail Description

Deer Lake Trail in Burnaby is more of a relaxed urban nature walk than a hardcore hike, and that’s exactly its charm. This 4.5 km loop is flat, easy, and usually done in under an hour, making it a solid choice for a quick reset before or after work, or a gentle outing with visiting friends and family.

The loop mixes gravel paths, pavement, and long stretches of wooden boardwalk that weave through wetlands and along parts of the Deer Lake shoreline. You’ll get changing views of the lake, reeds, ducks and other birds, with Burnaby’s skyline peeking in the background and a couple of benches that line up nicely with the mountain views. Not every section hugs the water, but if you do the full loop you get a good mix of forested sections, lake views, and a small beach area that’s a great spot to watch the sun set or check out the canoe, kayak, and pedal-boat rentals when they’re running.

Right now, expect a very easy, well-maintained trail with some narrow boardwalk sections where passing dogs and strollers can feel tight, and part of the boardwalk may still be closed for repairs, so follow the signed detours. In cold snaps the route can get icy, and locals have been recommending microspikes or crampons, especially if your dog pulls. Deer Lake Trail is open year-round, but in late spring and summer bring allergy meds if you’re sensitive to pollen, keep an eye out for small snakes sunning on cooler days, and remember that boat rentals and the little snack shop are cash only. Dogs are allowed on leash, and the gentle grade makes it friendly for kids, older walkers, and casual runners looking for an easy loop in Burnaby.
