Trail Description

Confederation Nature Trail in Burnaby, BC is a quick little loop when you want to get into the trees without leaving the city. At just 1.6 km with about 68 m of gain, it’s short but has enough ups and downs to feel like a real walk, usually wrapped up in around half an hour. It’s an easy trail on paper, but some folks find it closer to “moderate” because of the steeper bits.

The loop winds through second-growth forest on mostly gravel paths, with a few steeper sections and forks that can feel a bit confusing on your first visit. There aren’t big mountain views, but you do get small peeks toward the water from the northwestern side, plus a few benches and old stumps that give it some character. It’s quiet once you’re away from the road, so it works well for a quick reset or a short trail run.

Recent visitors mention that the section near the industrial buildings and the road that cuts through the park can have a noticeable chemical smell at times, so it’s worth being aware of that if you’re sensitive to odors. Confederation Nature Trail is popular with dog owners and is off-leash friendly, which means happy pups but also a busier feel during peak times. The loop is open year-round and handles rain fairly well, so aim for early mornings or weekdays if you want more calm, and keep an eye out at the forks so you stay on the main loop instead of wandering onto side paths.
