Trail Description

Skagit River Trail is a classic Fraser Valley hike that links Sunshine Valley and the Skagit Valley, running 14.5 km point to point with about 365 m of gain and a high point around 654 m. It’s rated moderate, but the challenge right now comes less from the elevation and more from rough conditions, river issues, and fire damage. Plan on about 4 hours of moving time, more if you’re exploring side loops or picking your way through blowdown.

The Skagit River Trail usually feels like a long riverside wander, with big cottonwoods, mossy forest, and constant views and sounds of the Skagit River. You can start from Sumallo Grove or from Silver Skagit Road, and the route stays mostly gentle and flat as it follows the valley. Delacey Camp and the camping use areas make it popular for easy backpacking when conditions allow, and anglers like the access to the river along the way.

Right now, this is more of an adventure than a casual walk. The gate is open and signs are back up, but a key bridge across the Skagit River is still out, and another bridge about 30 minutes in is also gone, so expect sketchy deadfall crossings and detours. The trail near Sunshine Valley and along Silver Skagit Road is clear and easy to follow but not maintained: lots of fallen trees, some scrambling on dirt and rock, and sections of thick brush after recent fire and storms. Late spring through fall is best, when water levels are lower; bring poles, waterproof footwear, and a backup plan in case river crossings or blowdown turn you around before Delacey Camp.
