Trail Description
Skagit Bluffs Trail in Sunshine Valley, just east of Hope, is a solid choice if you want an easy-to-follow out-and-back with some distance and steady gain without huge technical challenges. The route runs 11.7 km with about 555 m of elevation to roughly 935 m, and most hikers wrap it up in around 4 hours. It’s rated moderate more for the length and gradual climb than anything sketchy underfoot.
The Skagit Bluffs Trail roughly parallels the Hope-Princeton Highway between the Cascade Recreation Area lot and Cayuse Flats, so it feels more like a forest fitness hike than a remote backcountry mission. You’ll spend most of your time in the trees, moving through stretches of old growth and mellow terrain, with very limited viewpoints and no big mountain panoramas. If you’re training for something like the Fat Dog race or just want a long, runnable forest grind near Manning Park, this fits the bill.
Recent reports from August 2025 say the trail is in good condition and fully runnable, but you will hear traffic noise from cars and trucks on the highway beside you. Expect minimal crowds, bring bug spray in summer, and don’t count on water sources being reliable later in the season. Access can be affected by winter conditions and seasonal road closures near E.C. Manning Provincial Park, so this one is best from late spring through fall, with a high-clearance vehicle recommended if you’re pushing the shoulder seasons.
