Trail Description

Sumallo River – Silvertip Mountain in Sunshine Valley is a serious suffer-fest in the best way. This 23.8 km out-and-back with roughly 1992 m of gain tops out around 2542 m and is rated extreme for good reason, so it’s one of those routes you plan for, not “wing.” Expect a long, committing day with big mountain views as your payoff.

The route generally follows the Sumallo River area before climbing hard toward Silvertip Mountain, where the trees thin and the terrain opens up to broad alpine slopes and rugged peaks in every direction. It’s remote, quiet, and you’re unlikely to see many other people, which really makes the Sunshine Valley backcountry feel wild and a bit intimidating. On a clear day the summit area delivers huge horizons and that high-elevation, wind-in-your-face feeling that reminds you how small you are.

Recent reports mention an unkept, overgrown trail and a very tricky ATV approach, so expect route-finding, brushy sections, and slow travel right from the start. This is grizzly and black bear country, so bring spray, make noise, and don’t go solo if you can help it. Strong, experienced parties usually tackle Sumallo River – Silvertip Mountain from late spring through fall when snow is manageable, starting early with a full day’s food, layers for fast-changing weather, and a GPS track loaded before you lose service in Sunshine Valley.
