Trail Description
Watt Creek Horse Trail in Chilliwack is a solid local grind if you want distance, rolling hills, and a proper workout without heading deep into the backcountry. The official stats say around 8.4 km and 489 m of gain, but recent hikers are clocking it closer to 10 km, so plan your time and legs for a bit more than the sign suggests. It’s rated moderate and usually takes around three hours, but strong hikers are pushing for two and using it as a training loop.
The trail runs point to point through classic Chilliwack forest, with lots of vegetation, shady sections, and a mix of ups and downs that keeps things interesting. Expect a few short but punchy climbs and some easy creek crossings, plus route options that link over toward Teapot Trail if you want to extend your day. Views are mostly about the forest itself rather than big alpine vistas, so this is more of a meditative woods walk and cardio session than a summit bag.
Recent reports say Watt Creek Horse Trail is in great shape, with downfall cleared and only some muddy patches after rain. The Watt Creek trailhead has been closed at times, so many people are starting from Edmeston and looping back, including a 1.5 km, 220 m climb at the end that really burns the legs. Expect bushes crowding the trail in places, keep dogs leashed, and stay alert for wildlife; at least one hiker spotted a bear near the first kilometre. This one works well most of the year, just bring good footwear for mud and give yourself extra time if you’re not used to steady elevation.
