Trail Description
The Waterworks, Gussy's, Owl and Big Rock Loop near Chilliwack is a solid little forest mission when you want something close, quiet, and not too intense. At 5.1 km with about 257 m of gain, it’s classed as moderate, but most people in reasonable shape will find it very manageable in under two hours. It’s a true loop, so you’re not retracing your steps the whole way, which keeps things interesting.
The loop starts on a forest service road for roughly 15% of the route, then quickly ducks into the woods where it gets a lot more fun. Expect lush ferns, big mossy trees, and a ton of mushrooms in the wetter months as you work your way along Waterworks, Gussy’s, Owl and finally Big Rock. The “big rocks” at the end of Big Rock Trail are exactly that and worth the short effort, but don’t come here expecting huge valley viewpoints; this one is more about being in the forest than looking out over it.
Recent hikers report the Waterworks, Gussy's, Owl and Big Rock Loop as well marked overall, but AllTrails or a GPS track helps at a few junctions, especially where it feels a bit bushwhacky. You’ll see no trespassing signs along the access road; locals say those are aimed at vehicles, but some people still choose to turn around, so use your own judgment and stay respectful of any posted signage. The trail sees snow in winter yet has been done comfortably in regular hiking shoes, and it’s usually very quiet year-round, making it a good choice if you like solitude, damp forest air, and don’t mind getting brushed by ferns on a rainy Chilliwack day.
