Trail Description
Vedder Mountain via Vedder Mountain Forest Service Road is a long, grinding climb above Chilliwack that rewards you with big valley views and a real sense of distance covered. At 17.7 km out and back with about 852 m of elevation gain to roughly 922 m, this one feels more like a full mission than a casual leg-stretcher. It’s rated challenging for good reason, so plan on a solid half-day even though the posted average time is around 2 hours 45 minutes.
The route starts lower down on the Bowman section, which is mainly a hiking trail, then connects with the Vedder Mountain FSR and a network of moto-designated singletrack higher up. Expect steady climbing, some loose sections, and the odd rutted bit from motorbike traffic. As you gain elevation, trees open up in spots to views over the Fraser Valley, Cultus Lake area, and surrounding Chilliwack peaks, with a classic “ridge above town” feel once you’re near the high point.
Recent hikers report mixed trail surfaces from dirt and roots to rocky, churned-up sections, especially after wet weather, so sturdy footwear is a must. Dogs are not allowed on Vedder Mountain via Vedder Mountain Forest Service Road, and you should be ready to share upper sections with motorized users, especially on weekends and dry days. This route is best from late spring through fall when snow is gone from the upper elevations; in shoulder seasons, expect mud and possible snow patches higher up. If you want a shorter, more direct push to the summit area, many locals opt for the Vedder Mountain Ridge Trail instead.
