Trail Description

Vedder Mountain Road Ride in Chilliwack is a long, grinding out-and-back that feels more like a full-day mission than a casual stroll. At 23.7 km with about 1085 m of elevation gain, it’s rated difficult for good reason and usually takes around 8 hours to hike. Expect a steady effort, a mix of forest road and rougher sections, and a real sense of being out there away from town.

The route climbs the flanks of Vedder Mountain to roughly 488 m, with views opening up in pockets as you gain height. You’ll move through classic Fraser Valley forest, with sections of dense trees, clearcuts, and the occasional peek toward Cultus Lake and the surrounding hills. It’s not a manicured viewpoint trail; the appeal is more about the journey, the workout, and the changing feel of the mountain as you climb and descend the same line.

Current reports highlight that Vedder Mountain Road Ride is a designated motorcycle route (VMMC sanctioned), so expect dirt bikes and sometimes mountain bikes, especially on weekends and dry days. Hikers should stay alert, keep dogs leashed for everyone’s safety, and be ready for loose rock, ruts, and muddy patches after rain. The trail is accessible year-round in Chilliwack, but winter can bring slick sections and variable weather, so pack layers, bring plenty of water and snacks, and plan for a full day out and back.
