Trail Description
Vedder Mountain Ridge Trail is one of those classic Chilliwack hikes that feels way more “backcountry” than the stats suggest. The route is about 9 km out-and-back with roughly 387 m of gain, topping out around 920 m, and most people finish in around three hours. It’s rated moderate, but the real effort comes in short bursts rather than one endless grind, which makes it a nice step up for newer hikers who want something a bit more adventurous.
The hike starts with a short, brushy approach that quickly opens into airy second-growth forest, with soft dirt underfoot, moss everywhere, and long sightlines between tall trees. The ridge itself rolls gently, with a few steeper sections and scattered viewpoints north and south along Vedder Mountain. Near the summit, the character changes: you’ll hit rocky sections with fixed ropes and chains that add a fun scramble feel without being overly technical if you’re reasonably fit and take your time.
Recent reports say the Vedder Mountain Ridge Trail is in good shape, though there are occasional blowdowns and the first half-kilometre can feel overgrown and a bit spooky-quiet. The forest service road from Chilliwack is the real crux: the last kilometre is rough, with cross-ditches and a steep final turn, so most people park 600–800 m below the trailhead unless they have high clearance or 4x4. In summer, expect mosquitoes to swarm the second you stop, plus spider webs across the trail, so bring bug spray, a hat, and maybe a stick to wave ahead. This area is active wildlife habitat, with bear sign and the odd cougar sighting, so carry bear spray, make noise, and aim for shoulder season or cooler days if you want fewer bugs and clearer views.
