Trail Description

The Discovery in Chilliwack is a super gentle loop through the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, more of a relaxed nature walk than a hike. At 2.6 km with only 7 m of gain, it’s flat, easy, and usually done in under half an hour, but you’ll probably want to slow down and linger by the water and viewpoints.

Trail surfaces are mostly wide, well-kept gravel paths winding through wetlands, forest, and open river views, with lots of benches tucked along the way. The loop links sections like Salween Creek, the Centre trail, the Tower trail, and the Heron Colony Loop, and the viewing tower is solid and stable with a nice vantage over the reserve. Expect ducks for sure, and with some luck you might spot blue herons, bunnies, and other wildlife if you move quietly.

Right now, people are calling The Discovery in Chilliwack a beautiful, easy stroll in all four seasons, with clean paths and excellent interpretive signs that make it great for kids and casual walkers. It’s free to enter, there are porta potties around the loop, and dogs are allowed on leash, which keeps things calm for bird watchers. The main thing to prepare for is bugs, especially in warmer months around the wetlands, so bring strong bug spray and maybe a light long-sleeve, and plan to take your time rather than rush the loop.
