Trail Description
Vedder Rotary Trail North and South Loop in Chilliwack is one of those routes locals keep coming back to because it’s easy-going but still feels like you’ve done something big. At about 20.4 km with only 157 m of gain and a max elevation around 62 m, it’s long more than it is steep, so the “moderate” rating is mostly about distance. Hikers, runners, families, and cyclists all share this loop, and it’s popular for half marathon training, long dog walks, and casual river cruises on two wheels.
The trail follows the Vedder River on wide, well-groomed gravel, with constant water views, mountain backdrops, and stretches of shade from the trees. There are lots of access points down to the river, benches to break up the distance, and even a little storybook section along part of the path that kids love. You’ll pass wildflowers in season, blackberry bushes later in summer, and on hot days you’ll see anglers and people floating the river while you cruise by.
Recent reports say the Vedder Rotary Trail North and South Loop is usually in excellent shape, though it can get a bit muddy after rain and very busy near Vedder Park and the northeast end. There are plenty of washrooms along the route and just one brief road crossing to reach a bridge, but note there have been multiple closures on parts of the trail and cycleway planned into October 2024, with some users forced to turn back after a few kilometres, so check current conditions before committing to the full loop. The route is rideable on a road bike with fine gravel, though there are a few steeper hills near the end that some cyclists choose to walk, and on hot days it pays to start early, bring extra water, and reward yourself after with coffee at Mylk & Honey or ice cream at Banter.
