Trail Description
Mount Thurston via Elk Mountain is one of those Chilliwack hikes that fully earns its “difficult” label, but also its loyal fan base. This 14.6 km out-and-back with about 1,100 m of gain is a steady grind that usually takes around six and a half hours, and the payoff really starts once you pop out of the trees near Elk. Expect a popular trail with a busy parking lot on weekends and clear days, so early starts from the Elk Mountain trailhead are the smart move.
The first few kilometres are a relentless climb in the forest, well marked and well maintained, with roots, switchbacks, and not much let-up. Once you hit Elk Mountain, the hike turns into a scenic ridge walk toward Mount Thurston with big views over the Chilliwack River Valley, the North Cascades, and peaks like Mount Baker on clear days. Past Elk, the path narrows, rolls up and down, and the final push toward Thurston is steep, but note that the actual summit is treed in, so most hikers stop at the cairn and viewpoints before the true top.
Recent reports on Mount Thurston via Elk Mountain mention a solid, easy-to-follow trail, but also crowds, bugs, and seasonal snow and ice. In late spring and shoulder seasons, expect icy sections near Elk and ankle-deep snow toward Thurston; microspikes or boot spikes make a big difference, and poles help on the descent. In summer, bring bug spray for the mosquitos around Thurston, lots of water since there are no creeks, and consider a weekday or sunrise start from Chilliwack to avoid parking stress and traffic on the trail.
