Trail Description

Mount Thom via Thom Creek Trail is one of those go-to leg burners Chilliwack locals keep on repeat. This 6.4 km out-and-back climb gains about 435 m, so it’s a steady workout without turning into a suffer-fest, usually done in around two and a half hours. The trailhead off Sylvan Drive is close to town, the route is clear and signed, and you get legit valley views without having to commit your entire day.

The trail itself is a well-groomed, compacted gravel path that winds through shady forest almost the whole way, which makes Mount Thom via Thom Creek Trail a solid call on hot days. Expect lots of undulating sections with short downs before it heads back up again, a few steeper pushes, and some narrower single-track stretches. Benches at viewpoints give you an excuse to catch your breath and take in views over Chilliwack, the valley, and Cultus Lake in the distance when the clouds cooperate.

Recent hikers report the route is in good shape and well maintained, with maps and signs at key junctions and easy street parking, especially in the morning. It can get slippery with wet leaves in fall and after rain, and there have been wasp nests, mosquitoes, and the occasional black bear and cub sighting, so go prepared, stay alert, and keep dogs on-leash as required. Full shade makes summer climbs more manageable, bald eagles are common in February and March, and many locals use this as a year-round training hike or trail run when they want quick cardio close to the city.
