Trail Description

Mount McGuire via Borden Creek FSR is one of those Chilliwack hikes that makes you work hard for every metre, then pays you back in views. It’s a short, brutal 5 km out-and-back with around 598 m of gain, but the driving approach is half the battle. If you’re not comfortable on rough forest service roads, this one will feel harder than the stats suggest.

The route starts on old FSR, then dives into a steep, forested climb before popping out into open, loose terrain. From there it’s a grind straight up, with sections of very loose rock where you’ll want careful footing and maybe poles for the descent. On a clear day, the summit of Mount McGuire delivers huge 360-degree views over Chilliwack, Elk Mountain, Mount Baker, and the surrounding peaks, with almost no crowds.

Current conditions on Borden Creek FSR are rough and change fast. Recent hikers report washouts, a damaged bridge, alder pinstriping, and overgrown sections, so a high-clearance 4x4 and solid driving skills are strongly recommended; some people are parking lower and biking or walking the road. Expect some bushwhacking once you leave the road, loose rock on the way down, and heavy bugs in midsummer. Aim for late June to October for a mostly snow-free trip, download your map in advance, and don’t rely on Google or Apple Maps to get you to the Mount McGuire trailhead.
