Trail Description
Mount McGuire in Chilliwack is a huge day out, the kind you only plan if you’re fit, experienced, and ready to suffer a bit for big views. The full route is about 37.7 km with 2391 m of gain and usually takes around 15 hours, so this is an extreme hike and scramble, not a casual outing. Most people shorten it with a high-clearance 4x4 up the forest service roads, but it’s still a serious objective even then.
The approach follows Chilliwack Lake Road, then a maze of FSRs climbing toward Mount McGuire, so having an offline GPS track is almost mandatory. Once you hit the actual trail and ridge, things get more interesting: steep climbs, some scrambling, and long stretches above treeline with wide-open views of the Chilliwack River Valley and surrounding peaks. On a clear day the summit area feels huge and exposed, with meadows and open slopes instead of dense forest.
Recent hikers report overgrown forest service roads that soak your legs with early morning dew, plus moderate route-finding and no markers in the scrambling sections, so you’ll need solid navigation skills and comfort on loose, steep terrain. A capable 4x4 with good clearance can cut the distance by more than half; without one, expect a very long grind just to reach the real trailhead. This area usually has a seasonal closure from roughly October to April due to snow and access issues, so prime time for Mount McGuire is late summer to early fall when the road is mostly clear, days are long, and you can actually enjoy those summit views you worked so hard for.
