Trail Description
Mount MacFarlane in Chilliwack is one of those hikes you only tackle if you’re truly up for a suffer-fest with a huge payoff. This 17.1 km out-and-back with roughly 1800 m of gain is rated extreme for a reason: there is almost no flat, it’s steep right out of the gate, and most groups are taking 9–12 hours round trip, not the fantasy times you sometimes see online. Think of it as a full-on mountain mission to Pierce Lakes and a big summit, not a casual leg-stretcher.
The trail starts in dense forest, climbing relentlessly to Lower Pierce Lake with only the odd peek-a-boo view. Things open up after the first lake, with wildflowers in season, boulder sections, and then that unreal turquoise bowl of Upper Pierce Lake tucked under Mount MacFarlane’s summit ridge. From there, it’s a steep, sometimes exposed scramble with a couple of rope sections to the top, where you get huge 360-degree views over the Chilliwack valley, Mount Slesse, and both lakes far below, plus a prime alpine swim spot on the way down.
Recent hikers all say the same thing: this trail is a grind, poles are lifesavers, and it’s not beginner friendly. Expect overgrown stretches past the lower lake, logs across the trail, no facilities or bear cache at the upper lake, and very windy, buggy conditions at the summit. Start early, bring lots of water and layers, plan for summer to early fall for snow-free travel, and if you’re camping, push to the upper lake for better spots and views. Most important: the Mount MacFarlane trailhead parking area has frequent break-ins, so leave nothing visible in your vehicle and don’t stash valuables in the car.
