Trail Description

Heron Colony Loop – Centre Trail in Chilliwack is a super short, super easy walk that feels more like a nature stroll than a hike. At just 1.3 km with barely any elevation, it’s ideal if you want fresh air, birds, and water views without breaking a sweat. The loop sits inside the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, so expect a quiet, low-key vibe instead of a busy city park.

The trail starts from the main parking lot at the reserve and circles the South Lagoon, linking the Heron Colony Loop with the Centre Trail. You’ll walk through flat forest paths with frequent openings to the lagoon, where you can often spot great blue herons, ducks, and other water birds. It’s well-marked, easy to follow, and the kind of loop you can walk, then immediately turn around and do again if you want more time outside.

Right now, the main loop bridge is closed indefinitely for replacement, so expect a partial detour or out-and-back feel instead of a perfect loop; check signs at the trailhead for the current routing. The ground is mostly level and family-friendly, and there are washrooms on the trail, which makes Heron Colony Loop – Centre Trail in Chilliwack a convenient choice for quick visits. The area is open year-round, but it can get damp and muddy after rain, so waterproof shoes are helpful, and dogs are allowed as long as they stay on leash to protect the wildlife.
