Trail Description

Flora Peak in Chilliwack is one of those hikes that looks reasonable on paper and then smacks you in the legs in real life. The out-and-back route is around 12–14 km with roughly 1,300 m of gain, and it feels like almost all of that is straight up. It’s rated very difficult for a reason, but the big draw is the huge summit views over Chilliwack Lake and the surrounding peaks.

The trail starts in the trees with a long, steady grind that can feel like a forest tunnel for the first hour or so. As you climb toward Flora Pass the views start to open up, with more and more looks at Chilliwack Lake and eventually full 360-degree panoramas near the top. The final push to the summit is steep, loose, and a bit of a rock-hop in spots, but there’s no real exposure, and there’s lots of room at the top to spread out, refuel, and soak in the payoff.

Right now, Flora Peak is in full “take winter seriously” mode. Recent hikers are hitting snow a few kilometres below the summit, with thigh-deep, unconsolidated snow around Flora Pass and icy sections higher up. Microspikes are basically mandatory, snowshoes are often needed above the pass, and avalanche risk becomes a concern after the first real dumps in October. Expect the parking lot to close for the season and plan for roadside parking, an early start, poles for the brutal descent, and far more than 49 minutes on trail; most strong hikers are out for 5–7 hours. Save the summit for late spring to early fall if you’re not dialed in with winter gear and skills.
