Trail Description

The Chipmunk Creek to Mount Cheam Trailhead route near Chilliwack isn’t your average hike; it’s a full-on mission. You’re covering 29.6 km out and back with about 1,413 m of gain to roughly 1,445 m, and it usually takes around 10 hours. Most of that “hike” is actually a rough forest service road that feels more like an off-road adventure than a walk in the woods.

From Chilliwack Lake Road, you grind up Foley Creek FSR and then Chipmunk Creek FSR toward the Mount Cheam trailhead, with deep ditches, washouts, and long, bumpy stretches. When the road is clear, you get big valley views, wildflowers, huckleberries, butterflies, and the odd marmot or crow drama to keep things interesting. On clear days, the upper sections hint at the huge Cheam summit views you’ll get if you continue beyond the trailhead.

Current reports are crystal clear: a true 4x4 with solid clearance is basically mandatory, and even then you’re moving slow. In summer and early fall, expect a rough but passable road, no real bug problem, and heavy crowds at peak times, with chaotic parking and tight, sketchy passing spots near the lot. Late fall through spring, snow and ice can shut things down completely, turning the Chipmunk Creek to Mount Cheam Trailhead route into a hip-deep slog or making it impassable by vehicle, so check recent conditions, bring layers for the chilly higher elevations, and don’t attempt this in a low-clearance car unless you enjoy very expensive mistakes.
