Trail Description

Cheam Peak in Chilliwack is one of those hikes that completely lives up to the hype, which explains why the tiny alpine parking lot is jammed even on midweek mornings in October. The trail is an 8.7 km out-and-back with about 679 m of gain to around 2070 m, rated challenging mostly because it’s steady uphill and you’re exposed to real mountain weather. The driving approach is honestly the crux: expect a long, rough forest service road that demands high clearance and, ideally, true 4x4.

Once you’re on the Cheam Peak trail, it’s straightforward and well-defined, climbing through open meadows, blueberry bushes, and rolling alpine slopes with big views almost the whole way. The grade is consistent, so your legs will feel it, but there’s no confusing route-finding, and most of the hike is low stress until the final push along the upper ridge. On a clear day you get wide views over the Fraser Valley, Lady Peak, and the surrounding ranges, and even when clouds roll in, the shifting light over the ridges and Spoon Lake below is still worth the grind.

Recent hikers report very busy days in fall, with the lot filling by late morning and a steady stream of people on the trail, so aim for an early start. The FSR is getting rougher, with deep cross-ditches and washouts in the last few kilometres, and people in trucks with lifts are still scraping, while lower-clearance SUVs are making it only with very slow, careful driving. From late September onward, expect snow patches turning to full snow cover higher up, strong wind and a big temperature drop at the summit, so bring layers, traction if it’s icy, and plan extra time for the drive, which can easily be longer than the hike itself.
