Trail Description

Broken Tree Loop via Pitxel and Cholqthet is a short, easy forest hike on Chilliwack Mountain that gives you a solid leg stretch without eating your whole day. At 3.1 km with about 163 m of gain and a high point around 530 m, it’s a quick loop that most people finish in just over an hour, but it still feels like you’ve actually gone for a hike instead of just a walk around the block.

The trail winds through classic West Coast forest, with a mix of gentle rolling sections and one steeper push on the Broken Tree section that wakes up the calves a bit. The route is well signposted, and as you move along the Pitxel and Cholqthet portions you get glimpses through the trees and a nice sense of being away from town even though Chilliwack is just below you. It’s popular with walkers, hikers, and birders, so expect some company, especially on weekends.

Recent reports say the Broken Tree Loop via Pitxel and Cholqthet is in good shape, with only a bit of windfall you can easily step over and no major issues. The loop can get a little busy and there are lots of dogs, so if you’re bringing one, pack out your poop bags and help keep the trail clean. March through October is the prime window, but it’s low enough that locals use it most of the year; just plan for mud after rain, go early or late in the day for quieter conditions, and consider tacking on the first third of the nearby Gloria trail if you want a slightly longer outing.
