Trail Description

The Blue Heron Loop: Rotary Vedder River – Vedder North Dyke in Chilliwack is about as mellow as it gets: a flat 6 km loop with barely any elevation and big open views. It’s the kind of route you can stroll after work, push a stroller on, or use as a relaxed leg-stretcher before heading into the bigger Chilliwack hikes.

The loop follows the Vedder River and dyke, mixing riverbank stretches with views of surrounding farms and the Chilliwack valley mountains. You’ll pass between open dykes, short forested sections, and wide gravel paths, with lots of chances to spot birds along the water; blue herons are common if you keep an eye on the shallows. It’s not a wild backcountry experience, more of a calm, open-air walk with steady water and mountain backdrops.

Current reports say the Blue Heron Loop is well maintained and easy to follow, though there are many intersecting paths, so watch for signs to stay on the main loop. There’s no shade on some dyke sections, so it can feel hot on sunny days, but it cools off quickly near the trees and river, making it a nice spring and shoulder-season walk. Plan for about an hour at a relaxed pace, treat it as a casual outing rather than a big hike, and note that recent info indicates no dogs permitted, so check the latest local rules before you go.
