Trail Description

Skookumchuck Narrows is the classic “must-do” hike on the Sunshine Coast, and it’s actually near Egmont, not Pender Harbour. This 7.7 km out-and-back trail is mostly easy walking with about 188 m of gentle elevation gain, winding through lush coastal rainforest to one of the wildest tidal rapids in BC. Plan on about two hours return, more if you want to hang out and watch the show.

The Skookumchuck Narrows trail starts with a wide gravel road before narrowing into a soft forest path under big trees and thick ferns, with steady shade almost the whole way. You’ll pass side trails to Roland Point and North (Sechelt) Point, where the real action happens: standing waves, whirlpools, and sometimes kayakers or surfers riding the permanent wave. On calmer days you can scramble the shoreline rock, watch seals and porpoises, and peer into tide pools filled with starfish, mussels, and the odd jellyfish.

Roots, rocks, and a few muddy patches mean you’ll want proper footwear, especially on the last stretch to the viewpoints, which can be slick when wet. The key to Skookumchuck Narrows is timing: check BC tide tables or the Skookumchuck tide chart and aim to arrive at least an hour before the peak high or low tide, as you can’t see both the big whirlpools and the main wave in one visit. The trail is open year-round, busy on weekends and XL tide days, with a handy cafe and bakery near the start that’s ideal for a pre-hike coffee or a post-hike pastry reward.
