Trail Description
McNeill Lake via Copperhead is a low-key forest walk in the Pender Harbour area, not some big summit mission. At 6.8 km with only about 118 m of gain, it’s more of a steady stroll than a workout, and most people wrap it up in around an hour and a half. If you just want an easy outing to a quiet lake without worrying about steep climbs, this one does the job.
The route follows old forest service roads for most of the way, so don’t expect dramatic viewpoints or technical singletrack. Copperhead itself is basically a wide gravel road through second-growth forest, with a short connector and then a gentler path toward McNeill Lake. The payoff is at the water: a calm, tree-lined lake that feels peaceful and removed from the highway buzz, good for a snack break and a bit of quiet time before heading back the same way.
Recent hikers report the access road is bumpy, so take it slow and don’t bring your lowest-sitting car if you can help it. The McNeill Lake via Copperhead trail is well marked and easy to follow, but you should expect some muddy patches, especially after rain, which are manageable with decent footwear. This area around Pender Harbour is hikeable most of the year, though it’s more pleasant in the drier months when the road and puddles are less of a slog; go in with realistic expectations of a straightforward forest road walk to a peaceful lake and you’ll be happy enough.
