Trail Description

Mount Hallowell in Pender Harbour is one of those Sunshine Coast hikes that makes you work hard and then totally pays you back at the top. The route is about 15.8 km out and back with roughly 1080 m of gain, rated difficult and usually taking around six and a half hours, but it can feel longer if you start low on the forest service road. Expect a steady grind rather than a casual wander, and don’t count on much company out there.

The first two thirds are mostly disused FSR, a constant incline on loose rock with limited views, so it’s more about getting the vertical done than soaking in scenery. Once you hit the actual Mount Hallowell trail, things get more interesting: older forest, more shade, and a narrow singletrack that gets steeper and rougher as you climb. The final push to the old lookout and hut is very steep, mildly exposed in spots, and a bit overgrown, but on a clear day the summit views stretch over Pender Harbour toward Vancouver Island and up the coast toward Powell River, making that long slog up the road worth it.

Right now, hikers report the route as generally well defined on the road and more hit-or-miss on the upper trail, with some blowdown and sections where flagging thins out, so a GPS track is smart. The hut and tower structure on Mount Hallowell are still standing but in rough shape; many people avoid the stairs. In summer, water sources dry up by mid-July and August, and the FSR bakes in the sun, so start early, carry lots of water, and bring poles for the steep, loose descent. In winter and spring, snow lingers high up and snowshoes or skins can be necessary, especially on that last brutal 800 m of climbing.
