Trail Description

Malaspina Substation Road in Pender Harbour isn’t a dainty forest stroll; it’s a long, grindy climb that rewards you with huge coastal views if you’re willing to put in the work. This 19.6 km out-and-back route gains about 908 m and tops out near 982 m, so expect a solid leg burner that usually takes around 3 hours if you’re moving well and not stopping much. It’s classed as challenging for good reason: the distance, the grade, and the exposure up high all add up.

The hike is about 90% logging road, so it’s more about the scenery and elevation than technical singletrack. As you climb above Pender Harbour, the views open up over Texada Island, Nelson Island, Egmont, and Doriston, giving you a wide-angle look at the Sunshine Coast you don’t get from sea level. It’s the kind of route where the higher you go, the better the payoff, with big sky, wide horizons, and a real sense of how the inlets and islands fit together.

Recent hikers report a steep ascent and the final stretch blocked by fallen trees and deep snow, so right now you should expect a forced turnaround before the true end of Malaspina Substation Road. Bring solid footwear, extra layers, and be ready for changing conditions as you gain height; snow and blowdown linger longer up here than down in Pender Harbour. This one is best from late spring through fall when the snow is gone and the full summit views are more reliably accessible, but even in shoulder seasons it’s a strong workout with serious coastal scenery.
