Trail Description
Harris Lake near Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast is a solid choice if you want a long, quiet grind away from the crowds. This 20 km out-and-back route has about 628 m of elevation gain and tops out around 726 m, so expect a full-day effort for most hikers, usually around 5.5 to 6 hours.
The Harris Lake trail starts out on easier grades, then gradually ramps up as you work deeper into the forested backcountry above Pender Harbour. Views are more about moody coastal forest, rocky sections, and glimpses through the trees than big open panoramas, with the real reward being the sense of remoteness and the calm around the lake at the turnaround point.
Recent reports describe Harris Lake as challenging mainly due to its length and steady elevation rather than any technical scrambling, so it suits hikers with decent fitness and solid footwear. The area can get muddy and slick after rain, and roots and rocks are standard Sunshine Coast fare, so trekking poles are handy. Dogs are allowed on leash, and this trail stays relatively quiet year-round, with spring through fall offering the best conditions and winter bringing more water, mud, and shorter daylight that can make the long distance feel tougher.
