Trail Description
Conquering the Stawamus Chief via Sea to Summit Trail in Squamish, British Columbia requires tackling a demanding 3.7 km out-and-back route that demands expert-level scrambling and stamina. Ascending a brutal +557 m from a starting elevation of 39 m up to a peak elevation of 584 m, this strenuous path cuts steeply through a dense canopy of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and Western red cedar. The terrain tread is relentlessly unforgiving, featuring slick exposed root systems, steep rock stairs, granite friction slabs, and punishing switchbacks that test the limits of modern mountain mobility.
As hikers climb higher along the route, the physical exertion is rewarded with dramatic natural spectacles and shifting vantage points across the Howe Sound fjord. The trail passes cascading mountain creeks and localized waterfalls before navigating rugged canyon walls and technical granite scaling zones. Reaching the upper elevations opens up sweeping panoramic vistas of the surrounding Coast Mountains, Mamquam peaks, and the sprawling Squamish valley below, punctuated by exposed granite ridges and pockets of seasonal alpine wildflowers.
Accessing the route is straightforward via the paved Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99), with the trailhead located at the primary Stawamus Chief parking area in Squamish, ensuring easy 2WD vehicle accessibility right off the main transportation corridor. The optimal seasonal window for attempting this route runs from late spring through early autumn when the granite slabs and exposed climbing sections are entirely free of snow, ice, and slick winter runoff hazards.
