Trail Description

Shannon Basin Loop in Squamish starts right from the top of the Sea to Sky Gondola and gives you a mellow 9.5 km circuit with about 327 m of gain, so it’s more of a steady wander than a grind. It’s rated easy and usually takes just under 3 hours, which matches how it feels: a straightforward loop with a couple of viewpoints and some solid creek crossings, but nothing technical or scary.

The route is a mix of about 70% old logging road and 30% proper singletrack, so expect long stretches of wide, shaded road with the more interesting bits coming on the narrower sections and short lookout spurs. You’ll cross Shannon Creek on two main bridges, where the water is surprisingly impressive, and there’s a random picnic table viewpoint and a signed hummingbird lookout that are worth the short detours. Views are more “forest and creek” than big Squamish peaks, but you do get some nice glimpses over the valley and back toward the gondola area.

Right now, conditions on Shannon Basin Loop can be very different depending on season. In winter and early spring, the first part is usually well groomed with hard-packed snow where microspikes are enough, but once you cross the smaller bridge you can hit deep, wet snow and may end up breaking trail or turning around. In summer and fall the loop is usually dry, with some loose rock, a few downed trees that are easy to step over, and clear signage. Bring decent footwear, expect a lot of easy road walking with a couple of short steeper bits, and if you want more of a challenge or better views, consider linking it with the Sky Pilot area or the rougher, rope-assisted routes closer to Shannon Falls.
