Trail Description

Petgill Lake Trail sits just south of Squamish, starting from busy Murrin Provincial Park off the Sea to Sky, and it’s a solid workout rather than a casual stroll. This 10.3 km out-and-back with about 645 m of gain feels every bit “challenging,” with most people taking around 4 hours, often a bit more. If you like quieter forest trails with a cold lake dip at the end and don’t mind some rough sections, this one hits the mark.

The hike kicks off with a rocky, hands-on climb right away, which catches a lot of people off guard and would honestly benefit from chains or ropes. After that, Petgill Lake Trail settles into classic coastal forest: roots, rocks, a few little creeks and boggy bits, and a mix of old growth and tighter second-growth sections. Views are limited and often underwhelming compared to other Squamish hikes, so this is more about the journey through the woods and the calm little lake at around 764 m, where there’s a good “lunch rock” and the option for a chilly swim.

Recent hikers report the route is longer than apps suggest by 2–3 km, with some overgrown or abandoned-feeling stretches, so expect a tougher day than the stats promise. The first incline and a few junctions can be confusing, so keep an eye on the orange markers and your map. Parking at Murrin is a headache on weekends, and crossing the Sea to Sky Highway on foot is sketchy, so arrive early and be very cautious. Bears have been seen near the lake, the trail can be wet and slippery in shoulder season, and snow can linger higher up, so bring poles, go prepared, and treat Petgill Lake as a quiet, forest-heavy adventure rather than a big-view Squamish highlight.
