Trail Description
Panorama Ridge is the classic big day in Garibaldi Provincial Park, accessed from the Rubble Creek trailhead between Squamish and Whistler. It’s a long, punishing out-and-back at around 28–30 km with 1,600 m of gain, but the payoff is that famous view straight down over turquoise Garibaldi Lake and the surrounding peaks. Most strong hikers take 10–12 hours return, so ignore any fantasy numbers and plan for a full, serious day out.
The trail starts with long forested switchbacks that feel like they’ll never end, then opens into Taylor Meadows with wide views, wildflowers in late summer, and side trails to Garibaldi Lake. Beyond the meadows the terrain turns rockier and more exposed as you climb toward Panorama Ridge proper, with the last couple of kilometres feeling steep and slow, especially on tired legs. From the top, the ridge drops away to the lake and you can see Black Tusk, glaciated peaks, and the whole Garibaldi area laid out in every direction.
Recent reports from Panorama Ridge mention deepening snow past Taylor Meadows, with 50–60 cm of hardpack and variable powder on top, plus cornices forming along the ridge. Right now you should treat this as a winter objective: bring snowshoes or at least spikes, carry avalanche gear if you’re heading onto the ridge, and know how to read terrain. Expect mud and ice lower down, strong wind up high, and very short daylight; start before sunrise, bring headlamps, poles, and plenty of food, and don’t be shy about turning around at the meadows or lake if conditions or timing feel off.
