Trail Description
Mount Garibaldi via Brohm Ridge is one of the big, serious objectives above Squamish, and it feels every bit of its 40.2 km length and 2721 m of gain. This is an extreme out-and-back mountaineering route to around 2665 m, not a casual hike, and it demands glacier skills, solid fitness, and a full day or overnight plan. In return, you get a quiet line up one of the Coast Range’s most recognizable peaks.
The approach up Brohm Ridge starts with a rough drive up Cheekye FSR, then a long grind on old roads and open ridge to the glacier. As you gain elevation, views open up over Howe Sound, the Tantalus Range, Black Tusk, and the sprawling ice around Mount Garibaldi itself. Route-finding across the glacier and around crevasses and the bergschrund is where this shifts from “hard hike” into true mountaineering territory.
Recent parties (early June 2025) have been able to drive to about 1300 m on Cheekye FSR with high-clearance 4WD, then used a mix of snowshoes, microspikes, and crampons from car to summit. The heat is turning the snow slushy and punchy, especially on the steep slope above the rapidly opening bergschrund, with some climbers choosing to rappel the down climb; a rope, ice axe, and crevasse rescue kit are strongly recommended. Expect aggressive bugs lower down, and treat this as a late spring to early summer mountaineering route that can change fast with temperature—check recent beta, start early, and be ready to turn around if the snow bridge over the bergschrund looks sketchy.
