Trail Description

Mamquam Spawning Trail in Squamish is one of those low-effort, high-interest walks that locals keep coming back to. It’s a flat 4.5 km out-and-back with only about 46 m of gain, so it feels more like a nature walk than a hike, and usually takes under an hour at a relaxed pace. If you want an easy route with real wildlife action, this one delivers.

The trail follows the Mamquam River and the spawning channels, weaving between quiet woods and open stretches with water views. In season, you’ll see salmon stacked in the channels and often jumping, along with plenty of birds working the area. Part of Mamquam Spawning Trail runs alongside the Squamish Valley Golf Course, so it feels surprisingly open in spots, but you do need to stay alert for the odd stray golf ball.

Right now, expect a very easy, flat path that’s well maintained but can be seriously smelly when the salmon are running and carcasses line the banks. Parking is just a small pullout off the gravel road near Mamquam Road, so aim to arrive early, especially on weekends. Dogs are allowed but be aware of sticky seed pods that can mat into fur, and keep an eye out for wildlife like the occasional black bear along the river. The trail sees the most salmon activity from late summer into winter, which is also when Mamquam Spawning Trail is at its most interesting, stink and all.
