Trail Description
Garibaldi Lake to The Black Tusk is one of those Squamish-area hikes that sticks with you for a long time. Starting from the Garibaldi Lake campground, this out-and-back route climbs about 826 metres over 10.3 km to a high point around 2,295 metres, so it feels every bit as challenging as the stats suggest. Strong hikers can do it as a long day, but many people turn it into an overnight from Taylor Meadows or Garibaldi Lake to spread out the effort.
The trail up from Garibaldi Lake is surprisingly steady and manageable at first, winding through meadows and open terrain with big views of the Black Tusk looming ahead. As you gain elevation, the landscape turns to loose volcanic rock and things get more serious, especially if you push beyond the main trail to climb into the chimney. The views from the upper slopes and summit area are huge on a clear day, with Garibaldi Lake, glaciers, and surrounding peaks laid out below.
Recent hikers report that the main Garibaldi Lake to The Black Tusk trail is straightforward in good weather, but the chimney is where people get into trouble. The rock is loose, the route can be confusing on the way down, and rain turns everything slick very fast; a few parties have needed evacuation after getting off-route or stuck. Go with a partner, wear a helmet if you plan to climb the chimney, know your limits, and give yourself lots of time, especially if you’re carrying an overnight pack. Late summer and early fall usually offer the most stable conditions, but always check the forecast and be ready to turn around if it feels sketchy.
