Trail Description
Elfin Lakes – The Gargoyles is the spicy add‑on that makes an Elfin Lakes trip from Squamish really stick in your memory. From the Elfin Lakes campground, this 5.3 km out-and-back climb packs in about 423 m of gain and tops out around 1,805 m, so it feels every bit “challenging” even though it’s short. Most hikers tag The Gargoyles as a side mission after camping at Elfin, and on clear days you’re rewarded with big views over Diamond Head, Garibaldi, and the lakes below.
The trail from Elfin starts out mellow enough, then ramps up after the ridge as you push toward the saddle and the final summit. You’ll walk through sections that feel like a dry creek bed, picking your way over loose rock, then tackle a steep, dusty finish with some mild scrambling and bum-shuffling on the way down. On a good day you get wide-open alpine panoramas, golden-hour and sunset light on the peaks, and the bonus of wildlife sightings like marmots, pikas, and the occasional distant bear roaming the berry slopes.
Right now, expect loose dirt, rock, and occasional slick, muddy patches, with lingering snow early in the season that’s usually manageable in trail runners but can feel slushy. Poles and shoes with solid grip make a huge difference on the steep final climb and descent. Access is via the Elfin Lakes trail from the Diamond Head parking lot above Squamish; the road can be rough, and in winter you’re required to carry tire chains, so arrive with a capable vehicle, a full tank, and enough time to enjoy a swim or leg soak in Elfin Lakes after your push to The Gargoyles.
