Trail Description
Echo Lake Trail in Squamish is one of those routes that makes you work hard for every metre, then completely delivers at the top. This 8.4 km loop climbs roughly 899 m to around 905 m, and “very difficult” is not an exaggeration – people regularly describe it as feeling almost vertical for long stretches. Expect a long, sweaty grind, a quiet trail, and a shockingly nice lake waiting at the end.
The hike starts after you cross the Squamish River by canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or shuttle, then follows Monmouth Creek up the side of the mountain. You’re climbing beside a chain of waterfalls and deep pools with plenty of spots to swim and cool off, plus a big viewpoint over Squamish on the descent. The trail is well marked but rough and rooty, with scrambling, chains, and short exposed sections that need decent balance and some upper body strength.
Right now, Echo Lake Trail is steep, technical, and in good shape, but you should not underestimate the river crossing or the grade. Tides, current, and wind on the Squamish River can turn the paddle back into a serious workout, so many locals book a shuttle instead. Dogs are technically allowed but only recommended if you can lift them over chain sections and have a harness; most people say the trail is better without them. Aim for June to October, start early for easier paddling and sun on the pools, download your map, and give yourself more than the “average” time if you’re not a fast, confident climber.
