Trail Description

Cheakamus River via Garibaldi Lake Trail is a huge day out in Garibaldi Provincial Park, accessed from the Rubble Creek parking lot between Squamish and Whistler. At 42.3 km with 2,250 m of gain and a high point around 1,792 m, this out-and-back route is extreme by any standard and usually takes over 15 hours, so it’s more of an ultra-style push or a solid overnight. The payoff is linking some of the park’s most famous spots into one long, demanding adventure.

The trail follows the classic Garibaldi Lake Trail before branching toward Taylor Meadows, Panorama Ridge, Helm Creek, and down toward the Cheakamus River and lake area. You get a bit of everything: long forested switchbacks, open meadows with big views of Black Tusk and surrounding peaks, and then quieter stretches as you drop toward Cheakamus, far from the day-hiker crowds. The middle section around Panorama Ridge is where the scenery really opens up, and by the time you reach the Cheakamus side you’ll feel like you’ve crossed the whole park.

Recent hikers who’ve done this route multiple times say it’s long but very rewarding, with well-maintained trails and clear signage, though the distance and elevation add up fast. Most people break it into a backpacking trip using Taylor Meadows or Helm Creek campgrounds; if you’re attempting it in a single push, start before dawn, bring a headlamp, and pack for sudden mountain weather. The trail is generally accessible from late spring through fall, but shoulder seasons can mean snow and lingering ice up high, and dogs are not allowed anywhere on this Cheakamus River via Garibaldi Lake Trail route in Garibaldi Provincial Park.
