Trail Description

Barrier Lake and Lesser Garibaldi Lake is a stout grind with big rewards, tucked just off the Garibaldi Lake access near Squamish and Garibaldi, BC. This 13.5 km out-and-back has around 841 m of gain and tops out near 1,406 m, so expect a solid 5+ hour effort and a true “challenging” rating, not just a casual stroll. It’s a popular route for backpackers heading toward Panorama Ridge and the main Garibaldi Lake area, but still feels manageable crowd-wise on weekdays.

The hike itself is mostly steep forested switchbacks, which some people love for the rhythm and others find repetitive and “boring.” You’ll wind past cool canyon sections, big trees, and plenty of mushrooms before things finally open up near Barrier Lake and then Lesser Garibaldi Lake, where the views of the surrounding peaks make all that climbing feel worth it. On clear days, this approach gives you a quieter taste of the Garibaldi scenery without committing to the full multi-day circuit.

Recent hikers report snow starting around the 5 km mark in spring, with Barrier Lake still frozen and spikes recommended higher up, especially if you’re pushing on toward the upper routes. The trail is generally well maintained but expect a few fallen trees and some icy patches early season, plus cold, windy conditions near the top, even when it’s mild at the car. Signage and distance markers can feel a bit off, so download a map, start early, skip bringing dogs since this area is not dog friendly, and aim for summer or early fall if you want clear views of Barrier Lake and Lesser Garibaldi Lake instead of fog and slush.
