Trail Description

Soundview Trail in Lions Bay, just north of West Vancouver, is a quick hit of forest, views, and waterfalls without committing your whole day. At only 1.3 km out and back with about 79 m of gain, it’s short but has enough uphill to get your legs working, usually taking around half an hour. It feels like a locals’ shortcut into the woods rather than a big destination hike, which is part of the appeal.

The route follows an old logging road from Mountain Drive, dropping you down through second-growth forest toward the Soundview lookout and the junction to Magnesia Falls. The walking is straightforward but can feel steeper on the way back, since it’s downhill first and all uphill to finish. Views open toward Howe Sound in spots, and if you carry on toward Crystal Falls or Magnesia Falls you get the bonus of clear, cold cascades that are a nice payoff for such a short outing.

Current reports say Crystal Falls and Magnesia Falls are running well and look great, but the trail can be slick and muddy after rain, especially on the steeper sections. Soundview Trail is in a residential area with very limited parking and permit-only street parking, so plan to walk up from legal parking lower down in Lions Bay, such as near the school, and be respectful of locals. The trail is hikeable year-round, though winter can bring ice and wet roots, so decent footwear and a light are smart if you’re heading up in the shorter days.
