Trail Description

Four Lakes Loop in West Vancouver is one of those low-key North Shore hikes that sneaks up on you. It’s a 7.4 km loop with about 280 m of gain, usually done in around 2 hours, and it links First Lake, Blue Gentian, Lost Lake, and West Lake in one go. Don’t expect huge viewpoints here; this one is all about quiet forest, small lakes, and a surprisingly mixed trail under your feet.

You start on wide, smooth cross-country ski runs that feel more like a stroll than a hike, then things tighten up fast as you drop into proper singletrack. The Baden Powell section and the links between Blue Gentian, Lost Lake, and West Lake are rooty, rocky, and a bit rougher than most park trails, with short steeper bits but nothing extreme. The lakes themselves are small and calm, with West Lake usually getting the nod as the nicest stop, and you’re more likely to spot an owl or snack on wild blueberries than fight for space with a crowd.

Right now, recent hikers report quiet weekdays, technical but not overly muddy trails, and some missing or bridgeless creek crossings near Lost Lake that can be a trip-ender after heavy rain or spring melt. In late spring, expect lingering snow around Hollyburn and the higher sections, plus bugs near the water, so proper footwear, bug spray, and maybe a towel for a quick dip are smart. Four Lakes Loop is best from late spring to fall, but always check water levels and recent reports before you commit, because those two creek crossings can flip from easy rock hops to “turn around” territory fast.
